Industry Placements

Each student in the EPSRC CDT for Quantum Technology Engineering undertakes a 12-week industry placement at the end of their first year. These placements, which take place across the UK and overseas, give students experience of working in a commercial environment; they are not usually directly associated with their PhD research projects, though we try to arrange placements that use and enhance relevant knowledge and expertise.

Placement companies range from start-ups to global corporations, and from component suppliers and software houses to systems developers and major manufacturers. The range of placement activities reflects the wide range of research interests across all five disciplines in our university Faculty (Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Optoelectronics Research Centre, Engineering, Electronics & Computer Science).

Our first placements in July – September 2025 took our students to sites across the UK and overseas to Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia. Some placements linked to students’ wider skill-sets acquired as part of their CDT training, and directly to the thematic areas of their PhD research projects.
